Satellite & Space IoT
Explore remote-device messaging, satellite backhaul and hybrid networks. Keep communications, positioning and Earth-observation data distinct, then check the service your application actually needs.

A remote asset may need to report a small reading, backhaul a gateway or combine positioning with other data. Those are different jobs. Satellite connectivity belongs in the IoT decision when its service, terminal, power and operating conditions fit that job—not simply because a location is remote.
Start with the role of the satellite link
01 · Send data, carry a network or locate an asset
Direct satellite IoT messaging, a broadband/backhaul connection and GNSS positioning solve different parts of a system. Position data still needs a communication path if a remote application must receive it.
02 · Match the message to the service
Write the payload, reporting interval, delivery deadline and acknowledgement requirement. Check device/terminal support, antenna placement, power and service conditions. “Satellite enabled” does not identify a usable end-to-end service.
03 · Make the missing-data behavior explicit
Decide what the system does during an unavailable link, delayed message or exhausted allowance. Buffer, timestamp and review data according to the application. Do not present delayed observations as live control evidence.

Satellite networks and non-terrestrial networks
Explore the provider, constellation/network, service and terrestrial integration roles separately. Standards-based NTN and a particular proprietary messaging service can require different equipment and integrations. Resolve the actual supported combination.
Direct access, backhaul and hybrid connectivity
A sensor or tracker may use a direct messaging link; a local network may send data through a satellite-backhauled gateway. A hybrid design needs explicit path selection, retries, duplicate handling, timestamps and recovery—not just two radios.
Devices and development
Research the exact modem/module, terminal, antenna, gateway and development kit with its service documentation. Check firmware, power supply, environmental limits, interfaces, mounting and provisioning. A development kit is a learning aid, not proof of a production installation.
Positioning and Earth-observation data
GNSS provides positioning/time inputs. Earth-observation sources can contribute remotely sensed context. Combining them with field sensors requires attention to resolution, dates, location matching and uncertainty; it is distinct from choosing the device uplink.
Remote and resilient applications
Useful research contexts include field sensing, maritime assets, logistics, utility infrastructure and recovery communications. Start with a decision the data will support. A proposed use case is not a documented customer deployment or a quantified benefit.
Deployment evidence and service economics
Check sky view and antenna conditions, payload limits, reporting frequency, latency/revisit behavior, power and market availability. Price the exact hardware, activation, recurring allowance, overage, platform, support and exit conditions with dated evidence.
Draw the full route
For a direct device: sensor → terminal/network → service/API → application. For backhaul: local sensors → gateway → satellite connection → application. Mark positioning and external observation data as separate inputs rather than interchangeable network links.
Use exact provider evidence
Iridium documents small-data satellite services. Viasat distinguishes IoT service families; Skylo describes its NTN service and partner roles. A stated portfolio or footprint does not establish your terminal, site, country, tariff or measured performance. Sources checked 20 October 2026.
Pilot the failure and recovery
Test the application’s behavior when data is delayed, duplicated or absent, and when a second path returns. Retain original observation time and actual delivery time. Keep safety-critical or real-time control requirements subject to their appropriate engineering review.

COMPANY & SERVICE ROLE
Iridium
Iridium publishes satellite IoT devices and services, including Short Burst Data messaging. Start by choosing the communication function and supported hardware/service combination; the company name does not make every terminal or application equivalent.

COMPANY & SERVICE ROLE
Viasat
Viasat’s enterprise portfolio includes satellite IoT service families and legacy Inmarsat service names. Follow the current service documentation and the exact terminal/network combination so older names and newer offers are not treated as interchangeable.

COMPANY & SERVICE ROLE
ORBCOMM
ORBCOMM publishes industrial IoT solutions, satellite/cellular connectivity and devices. Its OGx releases and terminal documentation are useful starting points for an exact service evaluation, with release dates and device-generation limits kept visible.

COMPANY & SERVICE ROLE
Skylo
Skylo describes a narrowband non-terrestrial network service built with satellite, operator and device partners. Its role should be distinguished from owning every satellite in the service chain, and from supplying a retail plan for every device or country.
