Edge or cloud? Decide where IoT data should be processed
Edge processing happens near the source of data, while cloud processing uses remote services. Many connected systems use both. The useful question is which work belongs in each location and how the whole system behaves when a dependency fails.
Divide the work
List measurement, filtering, storage, decision rules, model inference, dashboards and device administration separately. A gateway might buffer observations locally while a remote service combines records across sites. The fact that one function works offline does not mean the complete product does.
Compare the operational constraints
For each function, record acceptable delay, bandwidth, data permissions, power and maintenance access. A local response may avoid a network round trip but still needs a capable host and a supported recovery process. Remote processing can simplify some central management tasks while adding connectivity and service dependencies.
Plan loss and recovery
Define how much local data can be retained, how records are ordered and how duplicates are handled after reconnection. Include timestamps and a way to distinguish stale observations from current ones. Decide what should stop or remain advisory when required information is unavailable.
Compare costs over time
Include hardware, installation, software maintenance, data transfer, storage and remote-service use. A design with lower network traffic may require more on-site maintenance. Do not infer the best architecture from a single device price or a vendor's general claim.
Create an architecture decision record
Write the job, processing location, reason, dependency, fallback and responsible owner for each function. Evaluate the same representative workload in the proposed conditions before making performance claims. Microsoft's architecture material gives examples of cloud and edge patterns; it does not establish a benchmark or compatibility result for your own setup.
