Smart bulbs
Choose a smart bulb by physical fit, useful light, everyday controls and exact ecosystem requirements—not colour effects alone.
A smart bulb puts controllable lighting electronics inside a replaceable lamp. It can be a small first automation project, but the useful choice depends on the fixture, the light you need and how people will operate it each day. Start with these three checks.
Shortlist with three checks
Fit the existing fixture
Record the base, available space, supply voltage and fixture instructions. Check whether the bulb is suitable for an enclosed or exposed location. A matching screw thread alone does not settle suitability.
Choose useful light
Compare lumens for light output and watts for electrical input. Decide whether you need one white appearance, adjustable white or colour effects; colour temperature is specified in kelvin.
Name the controller
List the bulb radio, app, required bridge or hub and any account. Verify the exact model in the intended ecosystem rather than inferring support from another bulb with the same brand name.
Read the meaningful differences
Brightness and white light
Compare quoted output at the relevant white setting and how the light will be used. A bright ceiling lamp, a bedside lamp and a decorative accent have different jobs. If comfortable low-level dimming matters, include it in a room trial; a maximum lumen figure does not describe that behavior.
Everyday switching
Plan a reachable control for someone without your phone. Cutting a bulb’s supply can make app control unavailable until power returns. Check its documented power-restoration setting and the intended switch arrangement. A wireless smart remote and a mains dimmer are different devices.
Routines and recovery
Find out where a schedule or automation runs. In a proposed pilot, check the physical control, a missing phone, internet loss and a power interruption separately. Keep a record of the model, account owner and reset instructions so another household member can recover the setup.
Model and market boundaries
Use the complete ordering code, hardware revision and regional documentation. Compare the bulb together with any required bridge, button or installation work. Do not combine an older manual, another market’s supply rating and a different generation’s connectivity features into one profile.
A fair one-room comparison
Write down the task before comparing products: for example, a bedside lamp with a warm evening setting and an ordinary reachable control. Check fit, useful brightness, your preferred white setting and behavior after a power interruption. If you try two models, record the controller and firmware used for each. This is an evaluation method, not an IoTPapa test result.
Documented examples
Hue A60 E27 ordering code 8719514291171 and Tapo L530E EU V3 provide specific starting records. They are examples with separate sources and dependencies, not a “best bulb” ranking. The WiZ A67 regional archive remains an explicitly unavailable regional example.
Sources and evidence
US Department of Energy: lighting measurements defines lumen output, power input and correlated colour temperature. These measurement definitions do not establish Indian product certification or a household saving. Tapo smart-bulb manual describes model-dependent setup and bulb-base distinctions; use the exact model’s regional documentation before purchase.
