Lighting and switches
Choose smart bulbs, switches and lighting controls around the room, existing wiring, everyday access and a recoverable setup.
Lighting automation changes how a room is controlled: at the lamp, in a wall circuit, or through a separate button and controller. Choose the control point before choosing an app. A rented room, a shared hallway and a permanently wired installation have different constraints.
Choose the control point
Change the lamp
A replaceable smart bulb is a useful pilot when you want scenes or adjustable colour without changing a wall circuit. Confirm the fitting, supply rating, enclosure and ordinary switch behavior.
Keep the existing lights
A connected switch or relay may control conventional lights. Specify the actual lamp or driver load and suitable control method; a dimmable lamp label alone does not establish a working combination.
Make control easy to reach
A wireless button can give guests a familiar control point. Check its controller dependency, battery maintenance and the actions available when internet or the phone is unavailable.
Explore the lighting choices
Smart bulbs and strips
Compare useful light output, white-light range and physical fit before decorative effects. A strip also needs a compatible power supply and controller. Keep the exact model and market on your shortlist rather than assuming every product in a family has the same features.
Wall switches and dimmers
Distinguish a controller for already-smart lamps from a switch that changes power to ordinary lamps. Hue documents separate modules for these jobs, with different wiring and load requirements. Ask a qualified installer to assess the circuit, enclosure and local requirements.
Bridges and controller roles
Draw the path from button or sensor to controller to light. Record which device runs a routine and which functions use a cloud account. A lighting bridge, a Matter controller and a Thread border router describe different roles; check the exact supported combination.
Outdoor lighting
Check the rating and installation instructions for every exposed component, including connectors and the power supply. Plan access for maintenance. An indoor controller placed near a window does not establish that the complete outdoor installation is suitable.
Presence-triggered lighting
Define the trigger, quiet hours, brightness and timeout together. Plan for a person sitting still, pets, daylight and someone using the manual control. Choose sensor position and routine behavior around the room rather than treating detection as certainty.
Plan one room, then test it
For a hallway pilot, write a proposed rule: motion after dusk turns on a selected light for two minutes, while a reachable button always provides an override. Check daylight, a person remaining still, a power interruption and internet loss separately. Record what actually happens before extending the routine. This is an example test plan, not an IoTPapa installation result.
Before buying or installation
Write down the fitting or circuit, exact model and region, controller or bridge, household controls, account owner and recovery method. Budget for the installer and any required accessories. Have an electrically skilled professional assess mains work; this guide does not provide wiring instructions.
Examples with defined scope
Hue A60 E27 and Tapo L530E EU V3 are documented bulb examples, not a ranking. The Hue Bridge profile explains one lighting-system dependency. The WiZ A67 regional archive is explicitly an unavailable regional reference; do not treat it as a current buying offer.
Sources and evidence
Hue: in-wall control types and installation constraints supports the distinction between smart-lamp controllers and controls for traditional lamps. WiZ: product-type selection separately identifies a connected switch and a wall controller. Product profile sources retain model and market detail.
