IoTPapa — connected technology, clearly explained

CONNECTED TECHNOLOGY. CLEARLY EXPLAINED.

Energy and utilities

Map the boundary of what you want to measure. Separate observation from automatic control and account for installation and maintenance effort.

Measure a defined service before expanding

Energy and utility systems connect a physical measurement to a responsible operational decision. Start with a clear load, service or resource boundary and reliable records. Separate electricity, water, gas and generation observations by their actual measured quantities and operating context.

Define the service boundary

Identify the load, resource or service and what the observation includes. Keep measured quantities, units and configuration explicit. Avoid combining overlapping meter boundaries.

Make the record trustworthy

Align timestamps and intervals, retain source identity and distinguish a recorded value from a timely upload. Show gaps, estimates and configuration changes.

Assign an operating owner

Name who reviews exceptions, approves a change and maintains the installation. Keep observation, analysis and control responsibilities visible.

Connect the boundary, the record and the response

1 · Boundary and commissioning

The facility owner and qualified provider document the measurement boundary, equipment/configuration, safe access and commissioning evidence before relying on a trend.

2 · Time and transport

The data owner confirms intervals, time zone, delayed delivery and outage/recovery behaviour. Preserve observation time separately from receipt time.

3 · Context and interpretation

The analyst retains relevant operating schedules, occupancy or production, weather and known changes. Label calculated and estimated values.

4 · Access and retention

Agree least-required account roles, export, audit access, corrections and retention. Demonstrate what remains available when service ends.

5 · Reviewed operational response

The responsible operator records an approved change and its service constraints. A separate control integration requires its own qualified design and tests.

6 · Comparison and maintenance

Review valid observations, assumptions, uncertainty, actual effort and costs. Resolve unexplained differences and maintenance needs before scaling or making outcome claims.

Pilot example: building submetering

Use one service or bounded load to establish meter identity, qualified commissioning, aligned intervals and operating context. The building submetering pilot explains gaps, estimates, operational changes and a reviewable baseline. It reports no measured energy saving or payback.

Select the observation and data route

Choose the quantity, units, resolution, interval and usable review window before selecting a platform. Separate meter observation, calculated indicator, estimated value and a command to equipment. Confirm configuration, transport, local retention, account access and export using a sample record.

Keep essential services and control explicit

Observation and reporting are the starting scope. Qualified providers own installation and commissioning. Any later switching, plant or grid interface needs its own supported design, authority, local protections and tested recovery. A graph or alert does not authorise interrupting a service.

Review conditions before attributing a change

Record schedules, relevant occupancy or production, weather and known equipment changes. Retain gaps, configuration changes and estimates. Have a competent analyst explain the baseline method, adjustments, limitations and uncertainty before claiming an effect.

Budget for the operating life

Include equipment, safe access, commissioning, gateways, communications, platform, analysis, maintenance, replacement and exit. Confirm who resolves a missing reading and who reviews an exception. A portal subscription does not establish an installation or analysis service.

Source context

US DOE FEMP measurement and verification overview supports method selection. Australian Government metering guidance covers inventory and data-route considerations. Regional regulatory, tariff and programme contexts are not local approvals for a proposed system.

Prepare a non-confidential brief

Describe the service boundary, available readings, operating question and responsible roles. Prepare a private requirements enquiry for Admin review. Avoid credentials and security-sensitive site drawings; onward sharing is optional.
