Home Assistant Green or Raspberry Pi 5?

Compare a dedicated Home Assistant device with a prepared Pi 5 installation. Focus on setup ownership, storage, required radios and recovery before choosing a host.

Research comparison · By Admin · Checked 18 October 2026 · Home Assistant host task; local offer not verified.

Compare complete Home Assistant hosts

Both routes can serve the home-automation host task. The decision is how much preparation and ongoing ownership the household wants, and whether the complete installation supports its actual integrations.

Compare the documented choices

Starting point

Home Assistant Green: Dedicated hardware supplied with Home Assistant software and an initial setup path.

Pi 5 installation: Prepare the supported Pi 5 Home Assistant OS image using the official installation guide.

Green reduces the initial hardware/software assembly steps. That is not a claim of zero maintenance or a measured setup-time advantage.

Storage and installation items

Home Assistant Green: The manufacturer specifies 32 GB eMMC storage and includes power and Ethernet cables.

Pi 5 installation: The cited Home Assistant guide calls for a Pi 5/4 with at least 2 GB RAM and a microSD card of at least 32 GB, alongside power and setup items.

Match the actual kit and installation method. Storage endurance, backup capacity and restoration success have not been measured by IoTPapa.

Network and placement

Home Assistant Green: Gigabit Ethernet is the documented network interface.

Pi 5 installation: The Pi 5 hardware includes Ethernet and wireless networking; follow the chosen Home Assistant installation requirements.

Plan a dependable host location, power and network connection. A hardware radio does not prove the desired protocol role or coverage in the final installation.

Additional radios and integrations

Home Assistant Green: The manufacturer describes adding suitable USB accessories for radio-based integrations.

Pi 5 installation: Check the required adapters and current Home Assistant support for the chosen Pi installation.

Zigbee, Thread and Z-Wave requirements are separate from the host computer. Select the exact adapter, role, region and released software path; do not assume every integration works offline.

Maintenance and recovery

Home Assistant Green: Own the integrations, updates, credentials, backups and recovery plan.

Pi 5 installation: Own those same tasks, plus the selected hardware assembly and installation details.

Write a small restore check and keep ordinary household controls accessible. Local hosting alone does not remove cloud dependencies inside an integration.

Complete cost and evidence gaps

Home Assistant Green: No verified current local offer or independent reliability result is presented.

Pi 5 installation: Include supply, storage, enclosure/cooling as appropriate, radios and the owner’s setup effort.

Compare current regional quotations for equivalent complete setups. No overall winner, benchmark or guaranteed saving follows from the bill of materials.

For a simpler initial appliance setup

Consider Green when a dedicated starting device suits the task and its documented Ethernet and accessory path meet the requirements. Confirm the complete kit, seller support and recovery route.

For an owner-prepared installation

Consider a supported Pi 5 installation when the owner wants to choose and maintain the hardware and software setup. Follow the current Home Assistant guide for the exact image and requirements.

For an existing Home Assistant household

List the current integrations, radios, storage needs and restore requirements before moving hosts. Trial a backup and recovery workflow rather than assuming a host change automatically improves reliability.

Choose an owner and a recovery plan

Begin with one useful household task. Record its devices, integrations, credentials, normal controls and expected behaviour during interruptions. The host is one part of that system, and the person maintaining it needs a practical way to restore a working state.

Evidence and software scope

Green specifications come from its manufacturer page. The Pi route is the current official Home Assistant installation guide for a supported Pi 5, rather than an arbitrary Linux/container configuration. Different installation methods have different responsibilities. No hands-on setup, power, availability or reliability comparison has been performed by IoTPapa.
