Echo Show 8 vs Nest Hub: household displays
Compare the third-generation Echo Show 8 and second-generation Nest Hub for a shared room. Start with camera requirements, existing accessories and household access.
Research comparison · By Admin · Checked 18 October 2026 · US reference generations; verify local service availability.
Choose the shared-room task first
Decide who needs to see and control the home, whether a camera belongs in the room and which accessories must work. Then evaluate the exact generation, account and service path.
Compare the documented choices
Exact generations
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): Echo Show 8 third generation, introduced in September 2023.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): Nest Hub second generation; not Nest Hub Max or the first Nest Hub.
These documented reference generations illustrate a shared-room control choice. They are not presented as the latest models or a current buying offer.
Screen and room placement
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): The 8-inch model is the reference here.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): A 7-inch touchscreen, with 1024 × 600 resolution in Google’s hardware specifications.
Try the actual placement, touch targets and reading distance. A diagonal size or pixel count alone does not establish readability, display brightness or a viewing-angle winner.
Camera and room privacy
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): The 2023 announcement documents a centered 13-megapixel camera.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): Google explicitly states that the second-generation Nest Hub has no camera; hardware specifications list a microphone-off switch.
If a camera is outside the room’s requirements, that hardware difference is decisive. Still review microphones, sensors, accounts, personal results and any linked cameras. No camera does not mean no data processing.
Hub and accessory role
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): The announcement documents Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth and Matter support in its built-in hub.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): Google lists Nest Hub second generation as a Google Home hub for Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread, including the Thread border-router role.
Check the exact accessory type and functions in the chosen ecosystem. Protocol names do not guarantee every device feature, local operation or cross-platform automation.
Accounts and changing services
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): Plan the Alexa account, household access and the specific supported services.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): Plan the Google Home account, household access and the specific supported services.
Verify current country, language, account and paid-service conditions. Launch promises and old service lists do not establish the AI assistant or calling features available on a particular unit today.
Ownership and evidence still needed
Echo Show 8 (3rd gen): Obtain current support, firmware and service information for this third-generation model.
Nest Hub (2nd gen): Obtain current support, firmware and service information for the second-generation model.
No current price, stock, security-support end date, independent reliability result or universal winner is established here. Include normal controls and recovery in a small trial.
For a room without an onboard camera
The documented Nest Hub second generation meets that specific hardware requirement. Review microphones, sensing, account permissions and linked-camera access separately; the absence of a camera is not a complete privacy assessment.
For an existing connected-home setup
List the accessory models and functions you actually use. Verify their control path in Alexa or Google Home, including Thread or another required hub, account sharing and ordinary controls when a service is interrupted.
For everyday shared access
Try one useful routine with the people who will use it. Check readable controls at the intended distance, personal information visible to others, microphone controls and recovery after a network interruption. These are proposed checks, not IoTPapa test results.
A useful choice follows the household requirements
Camera requirements and existing accessory/account dependencies can narrow the choice before display specifications do. If neither reference model meets those requirements with a clear support path, use the comparison as a checklist for another candidate rather than selecting a nominal winner.
Hardware evidence and service dates are different
Amazon’s cited source is a September 2023 launch announcement. It establishes the camera and hub features used here, not a current offer or proof that every promised assistant feature has shipped. Google’s hardware and Matter help pages establish the cited second-generation specifications and roles. Current subscriptions, calling, streaming, AI assistant availability and local-language support require their own checks.
Privacy and evidence scope
Google’s second-generation Sleep Sensing help article explicitly establishes the absence of a camera; this comparison makes no sleep-health or medical-performance claim. A camera-free display still has microphones, sensors and account controls to consider. IoTPapa has not carried out a privacy audit, display measurement, voice-recognition benchmark or hands-on reliability trial.
