Retail and Supply Chain IoT
Evaluate inventory, tracking and cold-chain systems through item identity, handovers, exceptions and reconciliation.
A supply-chain measurement is useful when it follows the correct item through the handovers that matter. Start with the exception you want to resolve: missing stock, an unrecorded transfer or a condition excursion.
Choose the exception to resolve
Inventory
Compare physical counts with system records at a defined location and time.
Tracking
Identify where readers or gateways actually observe an item rather than implying continuous visibility.
Cold chain
Connect the reading, shipment identity, timestamps and responsible response process.
Follow goods through the operating chain
Retail and stores
Connect shelf, checkout and footfall information to a defined store decision. Reconcile physical stock, sales and returns before treating more connected observations as better inventory accuracy.
Electronic shelf labels · Smart shelves · Connected POS · People counters · Retail analytics · Self checkout devices.
Identification and tracking
Separate the item identifier, the reader observation and the business event. Record where coverage exists, what was actually observed and how duplicate or missing observations are reconciled.
RFID tags · RFID readers · NFC systems · BLE beacons · UWB tags · Barcode systems · RTLS platforms.
Warehousing
Map receiving, storage, picking and dispatch to the warehouse record. Include unread items, manual corrections and operator acknowledgement so automation can be assessed against the actual handover task.
Warehouse sensors · Automated forklifts · Inventory robots · Picking systems · Dock monitoring · Warehouse management integrations.
Logistics and cargo
Connect a shipment identity with its route, condition records and custody changes. Distinguish a last reported location from continuous visibility, and assign responsibility when a record is delayed or missing.
Cargo trackers · Container trackers · Shock sensors · Seal monitoring · Route optimization · Last mile telemetry.
Cold chain and perishables
Match the monitoring method to the product, process and qualified operating requirements. Link readings to shipment identity, calibration context, excursion review and the person authorised to determine the next action.
Temperature loggers · Humidity loggers · Refrigeration monitoring · Food traceability · Pharma transport monitoring · Excursion alerts.
Packaging and commerce systems
State whether packaging supplies an identity, an observation or a claim requiring separate evidence. Shared records and connected labels must still be reconciled with the physical item and the responsible trading partners.
Connected packaging · Anti-counterfeit systems · Smart vending · Reverse logistics · Circular supply chain tools · Omnichannel integrations.
A practical example
For a receiving-bay pilot, log arrivals, unread tags, duplicate events and manual corrections alongside the warehouse record. Investigate disagreement before treating a higher read count as better inventory accuracy.
Questions to resolve
- How are missing and duplicate events reconciled?
- Who owns an item at each handover?
- Can an operator correct a record with an audit trail?
Use the evidence
The category map describes technologies and product types. It does not establish that a particular model is available, tested or compatible. Check the exact model, region, documentation and support arrangements before buying.

Primary sources and scope
GS1 EPCIS standard describes a common framework for sharing visibility events between applications and enterprises. A shared event does not independently establish the truth of the underlying physical observation. FAO: monitoring critical control points places food-process monitoring within trained review and corrective-action responsibilities. This category supplies technology evaluation questions, not a food-safety plan, product release decision or verified supply-chain deployment.
