Industrial IoT
Plan industrial sensing and automation around an asset, a measurable signal, operational ownership and controlled integration.
Industrial IoT should improve a defined operating decision. Identify the asset, failure mode, useful signal and response owner before choosing sensors, gateways or dashboards.
Choose the operating decision
Condition monitoring
Document mounting, reference measurements and the operating state of the asset.
Process visibility
Agree timestamps, units and equipment identity before combining data.
Control integration
Separate observation pilots from changes to production or safety systems.
Explore industrial systems by responsibility
Industrial sensing
Start with the quantity, operating range, mounting and reference method. Record units, timing and environmental conditions so a signal can be interpreted in the context of the asset.
Vibration sensors · Temperature sensors · Pressure sensors · Flow meters · Current sensors · Acoustic sensors · Torque sensors.
Condition monitoring and maintenance
Connect a meaningful change in a signal to an investigation and a maintenance decision. Plan the reference state, analyst responsibility and evidence needed before claiming a predicted failure or avoided downtime.
Machine monitoring · Predictive maintenance · Lubrication monitoring · Motor diagnostics · Bearing monitoring · Maintenance software.
Control and automation
Identify what observes a process and what can change it. Changes to production or safety functions require the site’s authorised engineering and change process; a dashboard pilot is a separate scope.
PLCs · SCADA · Distributed control systems · Industrial HMIs · Remote IO · Industrial drives · Safety controllers.
Industrial connectivity
Map each endpoint, data model, protocol version and access boundary. A working gateway connection is one integration step; it does not establish correct units, timing, semantics or support ownership.
Industrial gateways · Protocol converters · Industrial Ethernet · Wireless IO · Time-sensitive networking · OPC UA integrations.
Manufacturing and digital twins
State what the representation models, which records keep it current and which decision it supports. Distinguish a display or simulation from a model validated for a particular operating purpose.
MES integrations · Production telemetry · Quality inspection · Digital twin software · OEE monitoring · Process analytics.
Robotics and machine vision
Define the inspection or movement task, environmental limits and acceptance evidence with the responsible team. Keep detection accuracy, production integration and safeguarding as separate engineering questions.
Industrial robots · Cobots · Mobile robots · Machine vision cameras · Grippers · Robot fleet software.
Field operations
Review remote power, communications, environmental conditions and maintenance access for the actual site. Assign response and service responsibilities rather than assuming a remote alert creates a managed operation.
Mining telemetry · Oil and gas monitoring · Pipeline monitoring · Construction monitoring · Heavy equipment tracking · Remote inspection.
Commercial buildings
Connect facilities data to a named operating task such as occupancy review, maintenance or energy analysis. Check tenant access, service ownership and the boundary between monitoring and building control.
Building management systems · HVAC telemetry · Occupancy sensors · Lift monitoring · Indoor positioning · Building access integrations.
Hospitality and facilities
Evaluate guest-room, cleaning, kitchen and facility systems through staff workflows, privacy and service continuity. An automated task must still have a clear owner and an accessible manual process.
Guest room automation · Facility maintenance · Connected cleaning · Food safety monitoring · Laundries · Commercial kitchens.
Industrial operations software
Define assets, events, alarms, records and work orders consistently across systems. Check permissions, change records, exports and recovery arrangements before treating a combined dashboard as an authoritative operating record.
Asset management · Alarm management · Industrial historians · Operations dashboards · Edge orchestration · Remote service platforms.
A practical example
A proposed pump-monitoring pilot could compare readings during known operating states with maintenance observations. Record false alerts and investigations, not only alerts generated. A change in vibration alone does not establish the cause of a fault.
Questions to resolve
- Which action follows an alert, and who authorizes it?
- How are clocks, units and asset identifiers reconciled?
- What can continue if the gateway or supplier service fails?
Use the evidence
The category map describes technologies and product types. It does not establish that a particular model is available, tested or compatible. Check the exact model, region, documentation and support arrangements before buying.

Sources and engineering scope
NIST SP 800-82 Revision 3 frames OT security around performance, reliability and safety. Its publication page also identifies Revision 4 as an initial public draft as of this review. SKF: condition-monitoring technologies and services provides a supplier example of portable, wireless and online collection with analysis and service roles. This category maps evaluation questions; it is not a control design, safety certification or demonstrated operating result.
